Hey Friend,

With prom and graduation right around the corner, whose got time to read this eblast? Well you might not but we wanted to share with you a brief recap of the San Diego State drug bust currently happening and share tips for staying safe during the events this season. More than one-third of youth under the age of 21 killed in alcohol-related fatalities in 2001 died during the months of April, May and June - prom and graduation season - according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

We also want to tell you about four awesome bands we got to hear live while manning a booth at this year?s 420 Remix Event. One of them was chosen to be featured in our next DVD, Natural High 4! So take a second to check out their websites!

Over 1000 People Attend 420 Remix Event

Last month we joined the North Coastal Prevention Coalition to host their 420 Remix Event designed to take back the unofficial pot smoker?s holiday;4/20 from the marijuana smoking subculture. This year?s event featured a Battle of the Bands competition that took place at the Oceanside Amphitheatre. With the beach and pier only a few steps away, the event brought in not only those it marketed to, but many interested local youth who just happened to be cruising the beach that day.

Natural High hosted a booth where we passed out free copies of our latest DVD, Natural High 3 amidst the rocking tunes of up and coming artists; The Duree, The Funky Kicks, The Leventhour, Los Oliver, and Vanity Affair. We also raffled off a signed Tony Hawk Skate Deck and gear won by Marshall Sowko. We were thrilled to be a part of this prevention outreach and looks forward to participating in it annually.

Remember Your Prom Night and Other Important Events

Prom and graduation are two extremely special events that take place this time of year. Unfortunately, for some they are ruined when classmates ?party? and let loose, a little too loose, resulting in unimaginable alcohol and drug related deaths. Yours does not have to end up this way. If you want to stay drug and alcohol free you can, the decision is up to you and only you to decide. Wouldn?t it be nice to fully remember these milestones?

If you're struggling with this decision, help yourself at prom by getting rid of temptation before it starts. From my experience, students tend to party at this occasion because they are stressed from all the planning, anxious about their date or appearance, and/or believe that is what all their friends want to do, therefore majority rules or pressure starts to kick in. If you want to stay clean and sober then help yourself out.

  • First, do not attend these functions with a date, friends or group that is planning to drink or do drugs afterwards. Do not fool yourself; it will be hard to say no if getting ?smashed? is the only activity on the agenda. Most likely there will be no other forms of entertainment to keep YOU having fun. If these notions are preconceived, get out while you still can!
  • Second, if you simply can?t get out of tip #1, then practice saying ?no? with a best friend, parent, or other family member. You would be surprised how much this can help prepare you for the real deal.
  • Set up an accountability partner ? have a friend, parent, or other family member call and check in with you at predetermined times through out the night. Try to find someone who respects your decision to stay sober and cares about whether you stick to your decision. See if this person would be available to come pick you up if things get out of control.
  • Plan something special for yourself the next day if you stick to your decision. This will give you an extra incentive and goal to reach.
  • Try suggesting or planning ideas for sober post prom activities such as bowling, swimming, movies, Nintendo Wii tournament, etc. Try to find a parents house or location that you know is safe and will not tolerate substance abuse. You can still keep the party going in a fun and safe way.

Last but not least, remember the social consequences of drinking and drugs. Today, everyone has a camera or video shooting device on their phone, do not put yourself in a situation or condition that you would not want your father, teacher, principal, coach or youth group leader to see. A girl by the name of Kylee Darcy, created a PSA that defines exactly what a ?social consequence? is. Watch her video here.

And if prom and graduation is still off in the horizon for you, keep these tips in mind when planning other special occasions or weekend outings with your friends. Or simpler yet, choose friends that prefer Natural Highs.

"Sudden Fall" for Students at San Diego State

On Tuesday, May 6th 18 students were arrested on San Diego State?s Campus for drug trafficking, selling and possession charges. The undercover investigation, ?Sudden Fall?, was launched by the school and started after the overdose and death of SDSU student, Shirley ?Jenny? Poliakoff, about a year ago. Among the evidence seized in the investigation was 4 pounds of cocaine, 50 pounds of marijuana, 48 hydroponic marijuana plants, 350 Ecstasy pills, psilocybin mushrooms, 30 vials of hash oil, methamphetamine, various illicit prescription drugs, one shotgun, three semi-automatic pistols, three brass knuckles and $60,000 in cash. "Attn faithful customers both myself and my associates will be in Vegas this coming weekend, so stock up, we will be back Sunday night." the 19-year-old student wrote in the text message that sealed his fate.

As this news story continues to unfold, make sure you know the current. Trafficking and selling drugs is no joke. Visit this F.A.Q. page on SDSU?s website for the most recent updates and statements. Here is also a youtube video covering what is happening to the students after the arrest.
