Joke of the Month

Its time to start another school year! We thought we'd share something funny to lighten the load. Look forward to what you're returning to? Actual 6th Grade History Test Answers:

  • Ancient Egypt was inhabited by mummies and they all wrote in hydraulics. They lived in the Sarah Dessert. The climate of the Sarah is such that the inhabitants have to live elsewhere.
  • Solomon had three hundred wives and seven hundred porcupines.
  • The Greeks were a highly sculptured people, and without them we wouldn't have history. The Greeks also had myths. A myth is a female moth.
  • Socrates was a famous Greek teacher who went around giving people advice. They killed him. Socrates died from an overdose of wedlock. After his death, his career suffered a dramatic decline.
  • In the Olympic games, Greeks ran races, jumped, hurled biscuits, and threw the Java.

Hack the SATs; Strategies and Sneaky Shortcuts that Can Raise Your Score Hundreds of Points

Do you have students planning to take the SATs this year? Fresh off the market is a new book, Hack the SATs written by 29 year old, Eliot Schrefer, a Harvard grad student who spent significant time as an elite SAT tutor. Similar to the Natural High DVDs, the author speaks the language of youth, with every page being two-thirds SAT prep and one-third having fun. Here is a sampling of some of the top SAT tips he includes:

  • Writing. "The essay graders are only allotted three to five minutes for each essay. Less important than writing well is having the signifiers of good writing: Include at least two instances of sophisticated punctuation semicolons or dashes. And studies have shown that students who use the entire two pages given to them for the essay tend to get higher scores."
  • Reading. "The passages are all taken from published sources and re-edited so that the main theme is stated at the beginning and end. So if you get a question about a passage's main purpose, you can look at those lines for the answer. You never have to synthesize the whole passage."

Inactivity Leaving Teens Sluggish

A recent comprehensive study revealed that fewer then 3% of 15 year olds are regularly getting enough exercise. Researchers tracked children's activity levels starting at age 9, using an accelerometer, a device about the size of a small belt buckle that attached to a belt around the waist and recorded movement. Family income, race and ethnic background closely matched the U.S. population. Activity levels were counted at ages 9, 11, 12 and 15 during the school week and on weekends.

Results showed through age 12, well over half the children got at least the government-recommended amount of activity every day. By age 15 however, less than one-third were that active on weekdays, and only about 17 percent were on weekends.

This can best be explained by the amount of time teens now spend on the computer, especially with social networking sites instant messaging programs, coupled with schools dropping recess and gym class. However, the important thing to take away is the age group we need to target. Read Full Article.

"My class enjoyed the stars performing- this for me was the hook, but the message was imbedded in most of them without them even having to concentrate on it. Kids today are visual learners. They need to see to believe and then they want to copy what they viewed. Natural High has all the elements that capture students' attention."
