Dust Off - A Killer Substance

Jeff Williams, a police officer in Ohio, started a viral email campaign warning others about the dangers of ?Dusting? amongst Middle School kids. Jeff had a passion for building computers and was currently working on one in February of 2005. He bought a 3 pack of "Dust Off" but soon started recognizing that the cans were becoming empty a lot sooner then he expected. He talked to his two sons who both said they had used them on their computer and messing around with them. He yelled at them for wasting money but then returned to the store to purchase more. A few days later his wife went to wake their son up for school and found him hunched over, dead, on his bed with the straw from the can of "Dust Off" coming out his mouth.

Dust Off is a can of compressed air to blow dust off a computer. It is being used by kids ages 9 through 15. It gives them a slight high for 10 seconds and makes them feel dizzy. His son?s best friend told him it was cool and couldn't hurt you. Little to his knowledge it contains a propellant called R2 that decreases the oxygen to your brain and heart. There is no warning that it can kill you, however you usually die as you're breathing it in, if not within 2 seconds of finishing 'the hit.' We need to get this product out of our homes and school computer labs. Using Dust Off isn't new; it just isn't talked about much.  To read more on this story click here.

TimetoTalk with Dr. Drew

The Partnership for a Drug Free America recently launched a new site this year called, TimetoTalk, with the hope of encouraging parents to set aside time to talk to their children about drugs. TimeToTalk provides adults with practical tips, tools and information to not only start the conversation, but to keep it going. According to the Partnership Attitude Tracking Study, Teens 2007, by having regular conversations with your children, they are up to 50% less likely to use.

But that?s not all, famous radio figure, Dr. Drew, star of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, agreed to Partner with TimetoTalk to show his support. As part of this partnership, he created a 30 second PSA and he posed a question for parents on Yahoo! Answers, the largest knowledge-sharing community on the Web.

Your Role in Alcohol Messaging

Research indicates that warning children about the dangers of drinking and substance abuse will have little effect if parents do not set a good example. In other words, if there is drinking going on in the homes that more than anything else, is going to mold the children's attitude about their own drinking. There are five types of drinkers parents generally fall in to:

  • Stress Busters
  • Mood Enhancers
  • Inappropriate drinking
  • Binge Drinkers
  • Abstainers

Read here for common words and actions that stem from these attitudes, and how they could contribute to a child?s association to alcohol consumption.

The students knew the musical artists and cheered when they saw them. They listened to the message. It was not someone preaching to them, it was done in an easily relatable manner.
